Objectives: Understanding social representations about blood donation in relatives of patients with transfusion needs at the Rebagliati Hospital in Lima. Methods: Qualitative research with a phenomenological approach, in which the information was collected through in-depth interviews with direct relatives of patients with transfusion needs, between the months of May and July 2021. In total, 17 subjects were interviewed, between 18 and 65 years old, direct relatives of patients hospitalized in a social security hospital in Lima, with transfusion needs. Results: Social representations about blood donation are built from experiences and perceptions and influence people's behavior. While donating blood to your family members is the first option, there is a willingness to break those rules when the need is real and can be demonstrated. Lack of prior knowledge about blood donation, administrative procedures, rejection as future blood donors, and the absence of clear explanations can negatively affect the willingness to return. Conclusions: Social representations of blood donation are influenced by personal, social and cultural factors, including individual attitudes. This study emphasizes the need to address emotional elements to improve participation in blood donation and understand its social dynamics.
