Background: Screening for type 2 diabetes (T2DM) remains low in Peru. In 2022, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) lowered the screening age to 35 years, and included overweight or obese individuals with risk factors such as being Latino. It is unknown how many people have not been screened nationally and the factors that are associated with this. Objective: To determine the associated factors with the lack of screening for T2DM in high-risk population in Peru, according to the 2022 Peruvian National Demographic and Health Survey. Methods: A cross-sectional, secondary data analysis study was conducted. Screening was defined as having blood glucose measured in the last year. Individuals aged 18-34 years overweight or obese and those aged 35 years or older were included. Bivariate analysis was performed using the chi-squared test; multivariate analysis with Poisson regression. Results: Of 26,166 individuals, 25.3% were screened for T2DM. The factors most strongly associated with lack of screening were: age 18-34 years (RPa: 1.08; 95% CI: 1.05-1.11), having only elementary education (RPa: 1.18; 95% CI: 1.13-1.23), not having health insurance (RPa: 1.15; 95% CI: 1.12-1.18), belonging to the lowest wealth quintile (RPa: 1.09; 95% CI: 1.05-1.13), and daily smoking (RPa: 1.10; 95% CI: 1.01-1.19). Conclusions: The national rate of screening for DM2 is low (25,3%). There is a higher risk for a lack of screening in people who: are young, have only primary education, do not have health insurance, belong to the lowest wealth quintile, and smoke daily.
