Background: Currently, the world presents what is the double burden of malnutrition, diseases such as obesity, malnutrition and imbalances for micronutrients, coexist simultaneously due to the consumption of an unbalanced diet. In Peru, it is observed that the traditional diet is being replaced by foods high in energy, saturated fats, sugars and sodium, which can contribute to the development of noncommunicable diseases such as overweight and obesity. One of the main provinces of the country characterized by high levels of malnutrition and a high rate of change in overweight and obesity over the years, is Huancavelica. Some studies focused on specific populations of Huancavelica expose a deficient consumption of proteins and vegetables. However, no studies are known on the impact of diet quality on nutritional status. Objective: Evaluate the association between the Healthy Eating Index and anthropometric nutritional status in a sample of the urban adult population of the Huancavelica region. Methodology: An analysis of secondary data was performed from the project database "Comparison of the bioavailability of iron and zinc in a biofortified potato vs a non-biofortified one in Huancavelica", provided by the Institute for Nutritional Research (IIN). The sample consisted of 132 adult participants aged 18 to 45 years who had information on food consumption and anthropometric data. Diet quality was measured with the Healthy Eating Index (HEI-2020) and the Body Mass Index (BMI) indicator was used to assess nutritional status. Data analysis was performed in Stata version 17. Results: 37.1% had an unhealthy diet, 62.1% had a moderately healthy diet, and 0.8% had a healthy diet. Likewise, it was found that the anthropometric nutritional status according to BMI of the population was: 74.2% normal weight, 22% overweight and 3% obese. According to the statistical test, no association was found between the classification of HEI-2020 and the BMI nutritional status (p=0.755). Conclusion: There is no association between the healthy eating index and the anthropometric nutritional status in adults of the urban population of the Huancavelica region.
