Objective: To determine the association between knowledge and attitudes regarding self-medication in parents of children treated in the emergency department of Hospital Cayetano Heredia. Methodology: Observational, descriptive-correlational, and cross-sectional research. The sample comprised 338 parents, caregivers, and legal guardians of the children. A previously validated survey on knowledge and attitudes regarding self-medication was administered and correlated with the socio-demographic characteristics of the parents. Results: A direct, significant, and weak relationship (p<0.001, Rho=0.430) was found between parents' knowledge and attitudes towards non-self-medication, where greater knowledge led to a favorable attitude against self-medication. The highest level of knowledge was about adverse effects, and the most favorable attitude against self-medication was regarding medication precautions. Knowledge of the dimensions of medications used, symptoms, and adverse effects also correlated directly and significantly with attitudes. Gender, nationality, and monthly income of the parent or guardian were significantly associated with knowledge and attitudes, while nationality, level of education, occupation, monthly income of the parent or guardian, and the child's age were associated with attitude. Conclusion: There is a significant direct relationship between parents' knowledge and attitudes against self-medication for their children; however, this association is weak. Further studies are required to confirm these findings.
