Background: The growth in the use of computed tomography (CT) has suggested increased medical exposure to ionizing radiation for its benefits in detecting diseases such as stroke and traumatic brain injury; however, it is linked to an increased risk of cancer induction. Therefore, it is important to implement the use of dose reference levels (DRLs) in CT in each institution that has an X-ray room. Objective: Determine the typical values of dose reference levels in skull tomographic studies in patients adults from a level III Hospital. Material and method: Analytical and retrospective study, since 120 dosimetric reports of skull tomographic studies were used, acquired from a General Electric (GE) tomograph, from which we estimated the median of the dose indicators for CT, which are: dose in CT per volume (CTDIvol) and Dose Length Product (DLP). In this way, the typical dose values were determined in each group studied according to sex, age and clinical indication. Results: The typical values of DRLs for skull tomography obtained were 1216.945 mGy*cm for DLP, and 64.855 mGy for CTDIvol. Conclusions: The obtained typical values of CTDIvol and DLP show that radiation exposure was high compared to other countries.
