Mental illnesses pose a challenge to occupational health in various economic sectors. Adverse outcomes in the mental health of workers stem from exposure to working conditions that manifest as psychosocial risks, triggering occupational stress and predisposing individuals to other unfavorable physical and mental conditions. These conditions are not recognized as occupational diseases in Peru and parts of Latin America, creating a barrier to assessing impairment and, consequently, a lack of recognition for disability pensions due to occupational illness. Understanding the mechanisms of incidence and prevention of these pathologies is crucial due to their occupational origin and the severe consequences they pose to both the well-being of the worker and the organization. These issues can be prevented through effective management of working conditions. Mental health disorders are linked to a decline in labor productivity, an increase in absenteeism, rapid staff turnover, and a rise in medical leave, impacting the organization. This study conducted a documentary review of scientific and governmental evidence in both English and Spanish. Information was gathered from platforms such as Scopus and PubMed, as well as governmental repositories on occupational health. The collected data underwent eligibility criteria assessment and synthesis to evaluate its quality, generating results that express the best criteria for assessing the degree of disability or impairment due to mental or behavioral disorders in the workplace. Accurate evaluation of impairment due to mental illness at work is critical not only for pension purposes and recognizing the fundamental rights of workers but also for improving timely tertiary intervention and prevention strategies, thereby reducing the likelihood of more severe adverse events, such as total worker disability.
