Background: The submandibular fossa is a osseous concavity located below the mylohyoid line, in the molar – lingual area, found bilaterally and delimited by the body of the mandible mesially and by the mandibular ramus and the internal pterygoid muscle distally. Objective: To evaluate the characteristics of the submandibular fossa via Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) in patients who are candidates for dental implants at the Centro Dental Docente at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (UPCH). Materials and Methods: 47 CBCT were randomly analyzed according to sex (24 men and 23 women) and age (18 to 70 years old) to evaluate the characteristics of the submandibular fossa such as: Fossa depth (FD), Distance between the most concave part of the fossa and the axis of the mandibular body (DCE), Distance between the concavity and the alveolar crest (DCC), Angle between the concavity and the axis of the mandibular (ACE) and Anteroposterior length (APL). Results: Statistically significant differences were found according to sex (higher average for males in the DCC and for females in the ACE) and age (40 to 49 years old in the DCE and 20 to 29 years old in the ACE), while no significant differences were according to the side. Conclusions: Statistically significant differences were found according to sex and age, while no statistically significant differences were found according side.
