The discussion of contagious yawning (CY) has sparked debate regarding its link to empathy-related factors. While some studies support this association, others attribute the variability in CY responses to cognitive processes such as attention. This study aims to explore whether exposure to audiovisual content with prosocial and antisocial themes, acting as a proxy for empathy, affects the CY reaction. The research involved 108 psychology students from a private university in Metropolitan Lima during the second semester of 2023. Participants were randomly assigned to three groups: prosocial intervention, antisocial intervention, and control. In both interventions, participants viewed an initial video with moral content followed by a video containing CY stimuli, whereas the control group only watched the stimulus video clip. Contagion was recorded using observational techniques and participant self-report. In addition, psychometric measures such as the Empathic Concern subscale of the Emotional Reactivity Index (ERI) and the Prosocial Behavior Scale (PBS) were used to control for the effect of these variables on CY. The findings indicated that audiovisual material with moral valence does not have a significant influence on CY response. Implications for emotional bias theory are discussed.
