Objectives: To evaluate the association between onychomycosis, excess malnutrition and/or chronic venous insufficiency with lower limb cellulitis in adults over 18 years of age. Material and methods: Prospective case-control study. A case was considered to be a patient over 18 years of age, with a diagnosis of cellulitis in the lower limbs, hospitalized in the Internal Medicine Service of the Maria Auxiliadora Hospital during the study period; as a control the patient over 18 years of age who came to the hospital for care of an acute pathology. The variables studied were: age, sex, previous history of cellulitis, skin barrier disruption, onychomycosis, dermatomycosis, chronic venous insufficiency, malnutrition due to excess and edema. A descriptive, bivariate análisis and simple and multiple logistic regression were performed to calculate crude (OR) and adjusted odds ratios (aOR). Results: 182 patients were evaluated (91 cases and 91 controls). The cases presented a higher proportion of malnutrition due to excess (86.8% vs 51.7%), skin barrier disruption (34.1% vs 1.1%), and edema (15.4% vs 4.4%), compared to controls (p<0.005). Patients with excess malnutrition (OR: 6.16;95% CI: 2.96-12.83), skin barrier disruption (OR: 46.5, 95% CI: 6.18-348.8) and edema (OR: 3.95, 95% CI: 1.25-12.5) had a greater probability of presenting cellulitis of the lower limbs. The association of cellulitis and excess malnutrition was maintained after being adjusted for previous history of cellulitis, skin barrier disruption, dermatomycosis and peripheral venous insufficiency (aOR: 6.63; 95% CI: 2.63-16.73). Conclusion: Excess malnutrition is a risk factor associated with the presence of cellulitis of the lower limbs.
