Shift work has become widespread today, driven by various factors such as increased production, market demands, or company management strategies. It is widely acknowledged that this form of employment not only impacts the physical health of workers but also affects them on psychological and psychosocial levels. According to the literature reviewed, numerous health effects are attributed to the disruption of the circadian rhythm experienced by shift workers. These effects may manifest at the coronary, cerebrovascular, and metabolic levels, increasing the risk of obesity, cancer, adversely influencing mental health, and impacting family life. Given these considerations, the primary objective of this study is to conduct a comprehensive literature review to delineate and comprehend the disorders associated with the disruption of the circadian cycle and its implications for both physical and mental health. Additionally, management measures are outlined to ensure effective occupational medical surveillance, promoting the well-being of workers exposed to shift work. It is anticipated that this review will serve as a valuable resource and guide for other researchers interested in the addressed topics. Furthermore, it aims to stimulate awareness among readers, prompting further studies that generate higher-quality evidence on the subject. This work involves the review of articles and other research manuscripts published from 2013 to 2023.
