Background: Reflective ability is an act of awareness and judgment in the face of life experiences. Few studies evaluate this capacity in higher education. Objective: To determine the reflective capacity in health promotion activities registered in the virtual portfolio of the Social Dentistry III course of stomatology students of UPCH, Lima - Peru, 2019. Methods and Materials: Descriptive, retrospective, observational study. 42 portfolios were reviewed with the observation technique, using a rubric. Results: Reflective capacity was present in all seven dimensions evaluated (remarkable events of the course, skills and information acquired, personal skills, learning style, connections between the course and past life experiences, self in situation with the situation and future applications in a broad spectrum. Males showed higher presence of reflective ability in five of the seven dimensions (50,0% to 100,0%). Most students were placed in levels 4 and 5, and almost none in level 1 and 2. The health promotion activities most frequently referred to in the portfolios corresponded to Strengthening community action (42.8%), Personal Skills Development (42.8%) and Supportive Environments (35.7%). Conclusion: Reflective capacity was present in all portfolios but was predominant in men. Levels 4 and 5 of reflection were detected in most students, however, there was little mention of public policy and service reorientation activities with respect to health promotion.
