Background: Patients with HTLV-1 and Strongyloides stercoralis (SS) develop Adult T-cell Leukemia/Lymphoma (ATLL) earlier and exhibit a higher proviral load of HTLV-1 than patients without SS. It is unknown whether the effect of SS on the proviral load (PVL) persists after its eradication. Objective: To describe the evolution of HTLV-1’s proviral load after antihelminthic treatment and determine if the variation in PVL is correlated with the larval load (LL) of SS. Materials and Methods: Secondary data analysis of an observational, descriptive, and longitudinal study. A sample of 21 HTLV-1+/SS+ patients was analyzed, evaluating PVL and LL before and up to 36 months after antihelminthic treatment. Results: An initial increase followed by a tendency towards decrease of PVL was noted. The decrease was more pronounced in male patients, aged over 46 and with history of strongyloidiasis. A positive correlation was observed between initial PVL and initial LL (p 0.02). No correlation was observed between the variation in PVL and LL load (0.71). Conclusions: This study found no evidence that SS has effects on PVL after its eradication. Although no correlation between LL and the variation in PVL was found, the LL and initial PVL were found to be positively correlated. These findings suggest that the effect of SS on the natural history of HTLV-1 infection depends on an active SS infection. and on its magnitude.
