Background: Violence against women represents a public health problem, finding several factors that cause it, one of which is the relationship status, which has not been sufficiently studied. Objective: To compare the characteristics of violence, sociodemographic and mental health factors associated among women according to their relationship status with the aggressor. Material and methods: We used the database of the Epidemiological Study of Mental Health in Metropolitan Lima and Callao Replication 2012, conducted by the National Institute of Mental Health in a population-based, probabilistic sample of 4 190 currently united (MAU) or ever united (separated or divorced) women (MAVU). Instruments: The MINI: International Neuropsychiatric Interview, a Family Violence Questionnaire, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the Diener Life Satisfaction Scale, the Block Self Resilience Scale, and the Mezzich Quality of Life Index were used. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed to estimate associations considering the complex sample design. Results: MAVUs were 2.4 times more likely to suffer violence compared to MAUs, particularly sexual or neglect violence (about 4 times). This proportion doubles for systematic violence (≥1 or 2 times per month). A higher prevalence of anxiety disorders was found in MAUs, whereas, in MAVUs, a higher frequency of depressive disorders. Conclusions: MAVU had a higher rate of intimate partner violence and greater depression than MAU so it is necessary to take measures to protect them through laws and social awareness.
