The objective of this research was to demonstrate the presence of total mercury (Hg) in the fillet of the Peruvian silverside fish (Odontesthes regia regia) obtained from artisanal fishing from the sea adjacent to the fishermen's cove of the districts of Chorrillos and Pucusana in the Lima region, and Paracas in the Ica region. In each district, a sample of 10 fish was taken and a portion of the fillet was obtained from each one to quantify the total Hg using the technique of atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Total Hg levels were found between 0.001 - 0.008 mg/kg. Statistically, there was no significant linear correlation between the levels of total Hg and the length of the Peruvian silversides fish (p=0.3318), as well as the levels of total Hg and the weight of the Peruvian silversides fish (p=0.3789). In conclusion, the total Hg concentrations found in the sampled Peruvian silversides fish were below the permissible maximum level for human consumption.
