Background: Self-medication is a common practice worldwide, mainly in countries with limited health resources. During the pandemic, this practice was boosted, exposing the population to its potential risks. Objectives: To determine the frequency of prehospital self-medication in adult patients diagnosed with COVID-19 pneumonia during the second wave who were admitted to the Arzobispo Loayza National Hospital from January to February 2021. Likewise, to determine the demographic and clinical characteristics, and the relationship between selfmedication prehospital with mortality. Materials and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted. The data collection was carried out from personal health records through a previous elaborated file. The data were processed using the STATA 17 program. The level of statistical significance considered was p<0.05. Results: Out of 299 cases, prehospital self-medication was documented in 132 patients (44,14%), comprising 87 males and 45 females, with an average age of 57,09 ± 14,63 years. The most prevalent symptom was dyspnea, followed by cough, fever, and general malaise. Obesity was the most common comorbidity found, followed by arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Self-medication with corticosteroids was associated with intrahospital mortality (p=0,021), along with age over 60 and the initial SafiO2. In conclusion, self-medication is a practice employed by a significant sector of the studied population. This study demonstrates an existing relationship between prehospital self-medication with corticosteroids and intrahospital mortality.
