The objective is to determine whether there is an association between ultrasensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels and long-term cardiovascular and all-cause mortality in a rural, migrant, and urban Peruvian population cohort. Subjects with Hs-CRP serum values and complete data on the variables of interest in the baseline of PERU MIGRANT study were included. A cut-off of 3 mg/L was used to split the population into high (≥3 mg/L) and low (< 3 mg/L) hs-CRP levels. The events were collected after 10 years of follow-up. A Cox proportional hazards model was acquired with 95% confidence intervals. A total of 974 participants were included. In the crude (HR = 2.58; 95% CI: 1.54 – 4.33) and adjusted analysis (HR = 2.00; 95% CI: 1.08 – 3.73) of all-cause mortality, a significantly increased risk was found at high levels of Hs-CRP compared to low; however, we did not find a significant difference in cardiovascular mortality. Hs-CRP levels are independently associated with the occurrence of all-cause mortality in the long term in the Peruvian population, but not with cardiovascular mortality.
