Objective: To evaluate the root configuration and internal morphology of the root canals of the maxillary first permanent molar using cone beam computed tomography with a reduced field of view. Methods: A total of 86 permanent maxillary first molars were analyzed. The tomographic images were obtained through a reduced field of vision. The Chi-square statistical tests, Fisher's exact test, Student's t test, and U Mann-Whitney were used in the statistical program STATA version 16.0. Results: 93.02% presented three roots. In the mesiobuccal and distobuccal root, types II (38.37%) and I (76.25%) were the most frequent, respectively (Vertucci Classification). A second canal in the mesiobuccal root (MV2) was found in 83.72% of the images; in the cervical, middle and apical root third it was found in 80.23%, 41.86% and 44.19%, respectively. The average distance MV1-MV2 was 2.35 ± 0.55 mm. Conclusions: Most of the population presents a root configuration of three roots. In the mesiobuccal root, more than 80% present two root canals. Sex can influence the interduct distances MV2-MV1, MV2-DV and MV2-T point (p<0.05).
