Parenting style describes the dominant characteristics of the relationship between parents and children. These can influence the development of dental caries, because parents are directly responsible for aspects related to the infant's oral health. Objective: Determine the association that exists between parenting styles, oral health practices and caries in children from 3 to 5 years old. Methods: 170 days were recruited. Parents answered two questionnaires: the Parenting Style Dimension Questionnaire (PSDQ) and the WHO Oral Health Questionnaire. Children were examined for the presence of caries lesions according to WHO criteria. The Chi square test was performed to determine the association. Results: Two parenting styles are identified: authoritative (95.8%) and permissive (4.1%). Authoritative parents with a secondary education level had children with a higher prevalence of caries (71.76%). Unlike those who had children without caries lesions, who had a higher level of education (48.28%). Half of authoritative parents brushed their child's teeth two or more times a day (50%). However, they were not aware of whether the toothpaste they used contained fluoride (56.47%). Conclusion: No association was found between parenting style and caries in early childhood, and the authoritarian style was not identified. High percentages of parents were found whose children have frequent exposure to free sugars. An association was found between the level of education of the parents and their children's caries experience.
