One of the current requirements for optimal university education in the 21st century is the development of critical thinking. Although research has privileged the study of abilities over the volitional dimension of thinking critically, theorists point out the importance of the latter to fully configure the thinking subject. In addition, the components of motivation allow recording the first phases of the process in which the individual evaluates and decides if the task they are facing must be solved through the aforementioned skills. These decisions are determined by attributional and evaluative processes in a learning context. For this reason, the present study's main objective is to compare the motivation to critical thinking among students in the second semester of general studies at a private university in Lima, from public and private schools. The focus of this research is quantitative. In addition, it is of a basic type, of a descriptive level, and of a non-experimental cross-sectional design. For data collection, the Critical Thinking Motivational Scale is used. This instrument was built on the basis of Eccles and Wigfield's expectancy-value theory of motivation, and it presents adequate values of validity and reliability. After contrasting the hypotheses with the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test, it is concluded that there are no significant differences in the motivation for critical thinking between these two groups analyzed. Only in the utility value subdimension could it be proven that there are significant differences. (AU)
