Between October and December 1996, a susceptibility study of Streptococcus β-hemolytics was carried out in patients with upper respiratory tract infection, from the Central Health Hospital of the National Police of Peru, the Archbishop Loayza Hospital and the Cayetano Heredia Outpatient Medical Clinic (Clima). A total of 40 strains of Streptococcus β-hemolytic were isolated using the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC), and a higher incidence of Streptococcus β-hemolytic Streptococcus was found in Group "B" with 18 strains (45%). MIC 90 and MIC 50 were calculated for the total of the isolates for our study, obtained as a result for Amoxicillin, Penicillin-G of 0.125 μg/ml. MIC 50 was similar for Ampicillin, Amoxicillin and Penicillin-G of 0.125 μg/ml and higher for Erythromycin of 0.5 μg/ml. In the present study, 100% of the total strains (40) of Streptococcus β-hemolytics are susceptible to Ampicillin, Amoxicillin and Penicillin-G; in the case of Erythromycin there are 27 strains susceptible to the antimicrobial (67.5%) and 13 strains (32.5%) within the intermediate values. No resistant strains were found for any of the antibiotics tested. It was concluded that there were no substantial changes in the sensitivity of β-hemolytic Streptococcus to the antibioticscommonly used in our environment.
