Background: The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus among adults aged over 25 is 7%. This leads to an adverse socioeconomic impact due its effect on the work and personal environment on patients who suffer from late complications and who are unable to fulfill their daily work routine. Objective: To describe the frequency of late micro- and macrovascular complications in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus during adulthood (20-59 years) in patients hospitalized at a General Hospital in Lima. Materials and methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out with adult patients diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes mellitus admitted to the Hospital Nacional Arzobispo Loayza during 2022. Patients who met the inclusion were included through non-probabilistic convenience sampling. Medical records from that period were reviewed and the information was collected in a data sheet. Later it was transcribed and organized in Excel for analysis using the STATA V17 program. Results: 112 cases of diabetic adults hospitalized during 2022 were studied. Men predominated (59,82%) with an average age of 52 years. The median duration of diabetes was 10 years. 100% had microvascular complications and 81% had macrovascular complications. The most common microvascular complication was diabetic neuropathy (7,54%) and the most common macrovascular complication was peripheral arterial disease (78,54%). 77,68% had diabetic foot. The most frequent comorbidity was arterial hypertension (19,64%), followed by obesity (13,39%). Previous treatment was mostly with Metformin (47,32%) or Insulin (25,89%), and some patients did not receive treatment (7,14%). Conclusions: Diabetic patients aged 20 to 59 years with late complications admitted to a general hospital in Lima are mostly men, with a median age of 52 years. The main microvascular complication was diabetic neuropathy; and the main macrovascular complication was peripheral arterial disease. Most of the patients who presented these two complications also had diabetic foot. These findings pose a public health challenge due to the impact on society.
