The objective of this research was to identify the usefulness and usage of anatomical contents by medical students to interpret the symptoms, perform the physical exam, interpret images, and perform procedures. This was a descriptive study with the use of a survey. The sample included 114 interns (last year medical students) from Cayetano Heredia University who were doing their internship during 2014. To carry out the study, an instrument was developed with the anatomical contents of the locomotor, cardiovascular, respiratory and digestive apparatus. The validation of the instrument was carried out based on content validity by expert judgment quantified through the Aiken V coefficient, and the reliability was determined in two moments through the Test-Retest method. The results showed that of 133 anatomical content items, 115 and 105 were useful and used, respectively for the majority for the interpretation of symptoms; 113 and 107 for physical examination; 110 and 104 for image interpretation and 114 and 105 for carrying out procedures. Therefore, we concluded that knowledge of anatomy is essential for pre-professional performance during internship.
