Scabies is a disease that has displaced poaching as the main cause of death in vicuñas, with Sarcoptes scabiei var. aucheniae being the most relevant ectoparasite because it occurs more frequently and generates more severe skin lesions, compromising the animal's well-being and health, to the point of death. Given the need to improve the sanitary management of vicuñas to reduce the presence of mange, it is essential to know the current situation of this disease; for this reason, this project aims to determine the “frequency of mange in vicunas (Vicugna vicugna) in rural communities of Cusco, Ayacucho and Apurimac”, for this purpose, 1980 vicuñas were captured in the "Chaccus" during the months of June to September 2021. All the captured vicuñas were evaluated, finding skin lesions compatible with scabies in 154 animals, which were selected for the collection of biological samples through skin scraping, which were sent to the animal parasitology laboratory of the UPCH for the identification of the ectoparasite responsible for the disease with the use of an optical microscope. All the samples analyzed were positive for the Sarcoptes scabiei var. aucheniae mite, with a frequency of 7.4% of 1980 animals captured. It was determined that the rural communities belonging to the department of Ayacucho presented the greatest amount of scabies, with females and adults being the most affected by this disease; in addition, skin lesions were observed mainly in areas of the body with little fiber (belly, legs and perianal area). The study highlights the importance of good sanitary management and the correct use of medications to reduce the number of sick animals.
