Background: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is one of the most frequently performed abdominal surgical procedures. When studying the quality of life through measurement tools, being the Gastrointestinal Quality of Life Index (GIQLI) one of the most used, it is possible to show improvement after surgery, which is positively or negatively influenced by different sociodemographic factors. medical history, among others. However, these factors have not yet been conclusively identified. Objective: To determine and compare the gastrointestinal quality of life in patients older than 18 years prior to surgery and after 2 and 6 weeks after laparoscopic cholecystectomy using GIQLI, and determine its associated factors. Methods and Materials: Observational analytical study of prospective cohort. Study population made up of patients who underwent uncomplicated laparoscopic cholecystectomy in the General Surgery Department of Hospital Cayetano Heredia from November 2022 to February 2023. The factors whose association was sought to be determined were the following: sex, age, BMI, type of admission , history of abdominal surgery, severity of cholecystitis according to the 2018 Tokyo Guidelines, and comorbidities. The descriptive analysis consisted of a description of proportions, and for the analytical statistics, the means of the GIQLI score were compared with each factor, using Chi-square and T-test, considering p < 0.05 as significant. Results: 45 patients (31 women, 14 men) with a mean age of 47 years and a mean BMI of 26.9 were recruited. The most reported comorbidities were arterial hypertension and diabetes. 44.4% (N=20) presented a history of previous surgery. 60% (N=27) of the patients were recruited in the outpatient clinic of the General Surgery service, and 40% (N=18) by emergency. Regarding the severity of cholecystitis according to the 2018 Tokyo Guidelines, 17.7% (N=8) presented grade I; vs 22.2% (N=10), grade II. A significant increase in the postoperative GIQLI score was determined at 2 and 6 weeks (105.8+/-10, 120.5+/-8). Female patients (p=0.008) and with a BMI greater than 30 (p=0.0025) presented a lower GIQLI score. Conclusion: The gastrointestinal quality of life increases significantly at 2 and 6 weeks after laparoscopic cholecystectomy. In female patients with obesity, a lower GIQLI score is observed in the postoperative period.
