Background: Frailty is one of the current trending research topics related to geriatrics. Recent studies suggest an association between frailty and atrial fibrillation. However, there is scarce evidence from low-to-middle income countries. Aim: We aimed to assess frailty and other geriatric measures in elderly outpatients with atrial fibrillation in a general hospital of Lima, Perú. Methods: This cross-sectional study evaluated a total of 200 patients (mean age 74.76 ± 8.42 years, 41% females) above 60 years with a confirmed diagnosis of atrial fibrillation who underwent regular check-ups at the outpatient service. Frailty was assessed using the FRAIL scale, cognitive impairment was evaluated with Pfeiffer’s Short Portable Mental Status Questionnaire (SPMSQ), and functional dependency was measured using the Barthel Index. Additional data were obtained through personal interviews and from the clinical records. Statistical analysis was conducted using R Studio version 4.3.1. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered to indicate statistical significance. Results: Frailty and prefrailty were observed in 28.5% and 46.5% of participants, respectively. Frailer patients were found to be older (p<0.01), more likely to be female (p=0.01) and to have a higher frequency of illiteracy (p<0.01). Moreover, they exhibited a higher frequency of heart failure (p<0.01), falls (p<0.05), cognitive impairment (p<0.01), and impaired functionality (p<0.01). No statistical association was found between frailty status and polypharmacy or anticoagulation type. Conclusion: There is a high prevalence of frailty and pre-frailty among older adults diagnosed with atrial fibrillation who attend the outpatient clinic at a general hospital in Lima, Peru.
