Objective: To evaluate the relevant scientific literature on oral biomarkers for determining skeletal maturation. Materials and methods: An electronic search was performed in 4 databases and gray literature to obtain records that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. After selection process, data extraction was conducted. Subsequently, the risk of bias assessment was executed using the QUADAS-2 tool and finally the feasibility of generating a meta-analysis was determined. Results: The search strategy yielded 498 records. After eliminating duplicates and discarding those of a different research topic, 14 full-text studies; were evaluated, and three were incorporated by reverse search, resulting in a final sample of 16 studies. Only six met all the methodological quality criteria, presenting a low risk of bias. Most of the included studies exposed clinical, methodological, and statistical heterogeneity, except for two, which did not use statistical tests to define the diagnostic efficacy of biomarkers, for which reason meta-analysis could not be performed. Conclusions: Oral biomarkers could be convenient as an alternative non-invasive method due to their diagnostic potential to determine the pubertal growth peak.
