Background: The prevalence of anemia in the last 30 years has decreased by less than 5%; however, it continues to be a global public health problem. Older adults constitute a vulnerable group due to the aging process and its comorbidities. Objectives: To determine the frequency and etiology of symptomatic anemia in older adults who were admitted to the Emergency service of a level III hospital during the period 2 022. Materials and methods: A retrospective descriptive study was carried out, with a non-probabilistic sampling for convenience, searching the medical records in the period January-August 2022. The information was collected in a data sheet that was later transcribed into Excel 22 and STATA vs 17 for analysis. Results: A total of 225 cases of elderly patients who were admitted for emergencies during the study period were studied. There was a median of 73 years and the largest number of patients was women (51,56%). The most frequent comorbidities were arterial hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus, and the main cause of anemia was gastrointestinal bleeding (39,5%). The median hemoglobin was 7,32 g/dL for men and 6,99 g/dL for women, and the mean corpuscular constants reflected normochromic normocytic anemia. Conclusions: Of the elderly patients who were admitted to the Emergency Department during the study period, 19,07% had a diagnosis of symptomatic anemia, this is a prevalent condition in our country that, if left untreated, can worsen the prognosis and quality of life of these patients.
