Introduction: Central venous catheter-related infections are a frequent complication of hemodialysis which affects patients with chronic kidney disease who are exposed to this procedure. Objective: Determine the epidemiological, microbiological and clinical characteristics in patients with chronic kidney disease stage 5 on hemodialysis that developed catheter-related infections at a tertiary level hospital in Lima-Peru. Materials and methods: We performed a descriptive, retrospective case series with adult patients with Stage 5 chronic kidney disease diagnosed with catheter-related infection admitted to the Arzobispo Loayza National Hospital during the study period. Variables are presented as frequencies, means with standard deviations and medians with interquartile ranges. Results: 27 cases of catheter-related infection were included with a median age of 67 years [55- 71], and 56% of female sex. 17 (62.96%) had a tunneled, jugular catheter, 5 (18.51%) a non-tunneled, jugular catheter, 2 (7.40%) a tunneled, femoral catheter, and 3 (11.11%) a non-tunneled femoral catheter. 10 (37.04%) patients had previous infections. 20 (74.07%) patients developed fever. The mean value of leukocytes was 13 404/mm3 (±5 879). Staphylococcus aureus was isolated in 31.58% of positive cultures. Conclusion: Patients with a catheter related infection were mostly of female sex, elderly adults and had a jugular tunneled catheter. Fever was the most frequent clinical sign and Methicillin sensitive Staphylococcus aureus was the most frequently isolated microorganism.
