Background: Harmful use of alcohol is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, which is often undiagnosed. The minimization or denial of the disease is a common factor in patients with alcohol abuse and/or dependence problems, which delays early diagnosis and timely treatment. Objective: To determine the demographic, social and clinical factors related to the non-recognition of alcohol use problems in adults. Materials and methods: Correlational study, with a cross-sectional design, that uses the databases of the Epidemiological Study of Mental Health in General Hospitals and Health Centers of Metropolitan Lima and in Regional Hospitals, carried out in 2015 by the National Institute of Mental Health. “Honorio Delgado-Hideyo Noguchi”. Results: A statistically significant relationship was found for the non-recognition of problems with the use of alcohol (NRPUA) with the sex (p=0.045) of the patients, the presence of comorbidity of the depressive episode (p=0.018), mental health aspects such as the presence of psychopathic behaviors (p<0.001), violent behaviors (p=0.002) and low self-esteem (p=0.001) and good family cohesion (p=0.002). Conclusion: It is confirmed that the demographic, social and clinical factors considered in the present study are significantly related to the non-recognition of problems with the use of alcohol in adults who attend clinics of health establishments in Metropolitan Lima and in eight regions from Peru.
