The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of respondents who decided to raise dogs as a security element after having suffered attempted robbery and completed robbery in the urban areas of metropolitan Lima. For this, the National Survey of Budgetary Programs (ENAPRES) was carried out by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) in the year 2020. The classification variables were: Attempted robbery and consummated robbery, district groups of metropolitan Lima and type of dwelling and socioeconomic stratum (SS) (A, B, C, D y E). The study variables were: Use of dogs as security elements, and pet to guardian conversion. 4619 surveys were recovered. Of them, 5.0% (232/4619) indicated having suffered an attempted robbery at home, while 3.0% (140/4619) indicated having suffered consummated robbery. The highest prevalence of attempted robbery was reported in South Lima (5.5%), independent house (5.7%) and SS E (6.5%). The highest proportion of consummated robberies was reported in the constitutional province of Callao (3.9%), independent house (3.4%) and SS E (5.2%). 20.3% (47/232) of victims who suffered attempted robbery and 17.1% (24/140) who suffered robbery that decided to use dogs as security elements. In case of attempted robbery, the largest proportion belonged to East Lima (32.6%), with an independent house (24.7%) and from SS E (30.2%); and 6.5% turned their companion dog into a guardian dog. Of those who suffered consummated robbery, the majority came from the constitutional province of Callao (22.5%), independent house (22.2%) and SS E (21.6%); and 2.9% turned their companion dog into a guardian dog. It is important to evaluate the use and handling that is given to the dogs destined for security in order to determine that this is done respecting the principles of animal welfare.
