Introduction. High blood pressure or hypertension (HTN) is a disease with a considerable number of cases worldwide, and with the highest rate of consultations in hospitals of the DIRIS Lima Centro, within which the Hospital San Bartolomé is located. Aim: To analyse the availability of essential antihypertensive drugs in a III-1 hospital of the DIRIS Lima Centro from 2018 to 2021. Methods. Descriptive cross-sectional study, using the database of the DIGEMID. The sample was reduced to antihypertensive drugs considered within the UNEP 2018. Also, a documentary review was conducted to identify aspects that influence the availability of drugs and in addition, the estimate of the overspending of medicines in overstock was made. Results. On average, the availability of antihypertensive drugs at San Bartolomé Hospital was regular (84 %) in the 2018-2021 period. 65 % of medicines were in overstock (stock greater than 6 months). This generated an S/ 60,837.53 expenditure in excess. It was identified that the country still does not have the medicines recommended by international organizations. One of the factors that could have had a positive influence is that the hospital has a pharmacological committee, which focuses on medication management. However, local and national authorities do not get involved and hypertension is not given the necessary priority, and at the same time there are bureaucratic barriers to the entry of new drugs.
