Background: In the years 2018 and 2020, the External Quality Assessment Program of a private university evaluated 37 laboratories in Lima and provinces, enrolled in the Bacteriology Sub-Program. Aims: To describe the performance of clinical laboratories that participate in an external quality assessment program, bacteriology subprogram, in the period 2018 to 2020. Materials and Methods: During that period, the participating laboratories received 9 strains, with which it was evaluated performance in performing and interpreting Gram staining, bacterial morphology and identification at the genus and species level, as well as performance in determining susceptibility to antimicrobials. Results: The concordance for bacterial identification varied between 59.08% and 100% with an average of 84.89%; the agreement regarding sensitivity ranged between 47.38% and 95.84%, with an average of 75.87%. The average number of very serious, serious and minor errors was 11.1%, 5.88% and 10.13%, respectively. Conclusions: This research yields relevant data regarding the performance of clinical microbiology laboratories. Considering the importance of the information generated by these laboratories, for the diagnostic and treatment of bacterial infections, it is necessary to implement measures that can raise their level of performance.
