Only few and pathotype specific studies describe factors associated to symptomatic and asymptomatic infection with Diarrheagenic E.coli. Objectives. To determine the factors associated with symptomatic and asymptomatic infection with Diarrheagenic E.coli in children under one year of age, in peri urban areas of Lima, Perú. Design and methods. The database of a passive diarrhea surveillance study of 1034 Peruvian infants was retrospectively analyzed. Results. Overcrowding increased the risk of diarrheagenic E.coli symptomatic and asymptomatic infection (OR: 1.5, p=0.007, 95% CI: 1.12-2.11) and risk of EPEC infection (OR:1.7, p=0.046, IC al 95%:1.01-2.79). Children who had started feeding, had higher risk DEC infection (OR: 2.0, p=0.003, IC al 95%: 1.27-3.30) of EPEC infection (OR: 3.5, p=0.001, 95% CI: 1.64-7.5 ) and EAEC (OR:1.9, p=0.019, IC al 95%:1.11-3.31) symptomatic or asymptomatic infection. While having a refrigerator at home was a protective factor against EAEC infection (OR: 0.7, p=0.045, 95% CI: 0.51-0.99). . EAEC as a single pathogen doubled the risk of persistent diarrhea (OR: 2.5, p=0.023, 95% CI: 1.14-5.6). Conclusions. There is a greater risk of symptomatic and asymptomatic infection with diarrheagenic E.coli in overcrowded homes and in children who eat. These pathogens should be routinely looked for in young children, especially EAEC which was associated with persistent diarrhea.
