Introduction. - In Peru, women begin to become mothers before the age of 18. According to the 2018 report, an average of 12.6% of adolescents between the ages of 15 and 19 are pregnant or are mothers for the first time. According to Mercer, motherhood is a process of interactive development that women acquire through experiences through the mother-child bond. Objective. To determine the effectiveness of an educational intervention on the level of knowledge about the maternal role in first-time mothers attending the Juan Pablo II Maternity and Infant Centre. Material and Method. - The study design was pre-experimental, quantitative and cross-sectional. The population consisted of 200 mothers, and the proportion comparison formula was used to obtain a sample of 58 first-time mothers. The technique used was the survey and the instrument was a 17-question questionnaire developed by the researchers, with a reliability of 0.743 by Kuder Richardson Results. Before the educational intervention 74.1% of mothers had an average level of knowledge. After the educational intervention, the level of knowledge was high with 72.4%. A p= 0.000 was obtained. Conclusions. The educational intervention had a positive effect on increasing the level of maternal role knowledge.
