Background: The shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) during the COVID-19 pandemic has forced staff working in health facilities to increase the time of use and collection of PPE despite recommendations from national and foreign institutions and negative health effects. Objective: Describe the frequency of prolonged use and decontamination of PPE in health personnel working in the city of Lima-Metropolitan during the months of March to September 2021. Materials and methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study, where a survey was taken of 393 people working in health facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic on the use, time of use, gathering and disinfection of PPE. EPP use relative to hours was divided into less equal (≤) than 6 hours and greater (>) than 6 hours. Results: The EPPs used up to 6 consecutive hours are disposable mandylon (67.8%), respirator N95/FFP2 (68.9%) and surgical gloves (90.5%). 80.4% of respondents mentioned reusing their PPE, 61.9% refused up to 3 times their respirator N95/FPP2, while 78% reused up to 7 times their facial protector. The most commonly used disinfection methods are alcohol 70% (71.2%), the most commonly used method for disinfecting the respirator N95/FFP2 is UVGI (22.7%). Conclusion: The frequency of prolonged use in PPE was observed mainly in respirator N95/ FPP2 (31.1%), disposable mandylon (32.2%), surgical mask (25.2%) and disposable cap (32.3%) and 69.2% of respondents mention that it decontaminates their PPE.
