Human herpes virus-8 (HHV-8) is considered the etiological agent of all four clinical variants of Kaposi sarcoma (KS). The aim of the present study was to describe HHV-8 subtypes on epidemic and classic KS specimens from patients attended at the Instituto de Medicina Tropical “Alexander von Humboldt” and at Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia. A cross- sectional study was performed, based on paraffin blocks with confirmed histopathological diagnosis of epidemic and classic KS. Thirty six blocks were obtained. Enough DNA was obtained from 30 of them, but only 25 cases could be genotyped. Nested-PCR was used for K1 gen amplification. Sequence analysis showed that 14 cases correspond to subtype C, eight cases to subtype A (including one A5), one case to subtype B, and two cases to subtype E. We conclude that our country presents a high diversity of HHV-8 subtypes as a consequence of diverse historical, social, and cultural factors. We have obtained the E subtype for the first time from a KS lesion, showing that it is capable of producing such lesions.
