The main purpose of the new university law is to promote the continuous improvement of the educational service towards a quality education, which allows providing comprehensive training focused on competent professional performance. This implies that the evaluation system responds to a comprehensive pedagogy and formative orientation. In this sense, the objective of this study was to understand the conceptions and practice of formative evaluation assumed by the professors of a faculty of art and design of a private university in Lima. Through a qualitative study with a phenomenological approach, which consisted in the application of semi-structured interviews to nine teachers. The findings allowed us to visualize that the conceptions and practices of teachers lie in the formative evaluation approach, but many are not aware of this, only teachers with a higher degree of training in pedagogy understand the scope and importance of this in the teaching process. and learning. However, the strategies (feedback, peer evaluations and self-evaluations) are generally carried out without the articulation of clearly defined evaluation instruments, added to the lack of definition of the criteria associated with the plastic arts. These findings suggest that teachers need to delve into the theoretical and methodological foundations of formative assessment, recognize a greater diversity of assessment instruments, clarify elusive disciplinary dimensions, and reflect on the emphasis regarding the objectives of each subject to apply. formative assessment in a relevant and appropriate manner.
