Objetive: To determine if breastfeeding for ≥ 6 months is associated with less overweight and obesity in children aged 2 to 5 years. Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional analysis of national DHS survey data from Bolivia, Colombia, and Peru. Overweight and obesity were defined using the WHO criteria; In the case of breastfeeding, the mother's self-report is constructed based on the WHO definition: exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life. The odds ratio was calculated using binomial logistic regression, adjusting for confounding variables. Likewise, the sample weights for the estimates made were considered. Results: The prevalence of overweight and obesity in children from 2 to 5 years old was 43.7% in Bolivia, 26.4% in Colombia and 32.9% in Peru. Breastfeeding ≥ 6 months in the population studied was 89.9% in Bolivia, 73.9% in Colombia, and 92.8% in Peru. Evidence of association between breastfeeding ≥6 months and lower chance of overweight was found only for Peru (ORc 0.56; 95% CI 0.35-0.91); while in the case of obesity it was for the three countries: Bolivia (ORc=0.34; 95%CI: 0.19– 0.60), Colombia (ORc=0.67; 95%CI: 0.45–0.99) and Peru (ORc=0.29; 95%CI). :0.14–0.60) compared with non-lactation or lactation < 6 months. When adjusting for characteristics of the child, mother, household, and environment, the association remains significant for Bolivia and becomes marginal for Colombia and Peru. Conclusion: Breastfeeding ≥ 6 months is associated with a lower chance of obesity in children 2 to 5 years of age in Bolivia, Colombia, and Peru. In the case of the minor association of overweight and BF ≥ 6 months, it is only relevant for Peru. The most relevant characteristic is the mother's nutritional status for the three countries.
