The Quiulacocha lake (Pasco, Peru), classified as a mining environmental liability, shows highly acidic conditions (pH 2.4) and a high content of levels of different heavy metals, among which Cd, Pb and As stand out. Consequently, its waters have become a source with great potential for contamination for the town of Quiulacocha and the ecosystem of this area [2]. A promising solution to this environmental problem is bioremediation, a process that uses living organisms to remove contaminants in the environment and reduce their effects on soil, water, and air [15]. Among microorganisms, several species belonging to the genus Lactobacillus can bind and sequester metal ions [19]. Several studies have shown the efficacy of L. plantarum, L. acidophilus, L. rhamnosus and L. fermentum in the removal of Cd, Pb and As under biosorption and bioaccumulation processes [19, 25, 26, 27]. However, the ability to remove these metals depends on a variety of factors such as pH, temperature, the strain or species evaluated, the characteristics of the metal ions and the type of biomass used [19, 25, 26, 27]. Little is known about the removal capacity of Cd, Pb and As by the species L. plantarum and L. fermentum; as well as the strains of L. acidophilus ATCC 20552 and L. rhamnosus GG ATCC 53103 [25, 26], at the conditions of pH, temperature and metal ion concentration of the Quiulacocha lagoon. Therefore, this project proposes to evaluate the capacity to remove Cd, Pb and As by the inactive biomass of the selected lactobacilli, individually and together, at pH 2.4 and a temperature of 14.7°C from the Quiulacocha lagoon. To do this, it is proposed to simulate the temperature conditions using lagoon water in a laboratory environment in order to determine if these species and strains can effectively remove Cd, Pb and As as inactive biomass; which will allow suggesting species of lactobacilli whose biomass could be applied for the removal of Cd, Pb and As in the Quiulacocha lagoon.
