Background: Iron have a key role in a number of metabolic processes. Iron deficiency (ID) is the most common nutritional deficiency in the world, with about 1620 million people affected, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). However, it is not only ID that causes complications in the population; excess iron can also lead to disorders such as heart disease and neurological problems, such as Parkinson's or Alzheimer's disease. It is therefore important not only to detect and treat iron deficiency, but also to prevent the body from receiving more iron than necessary. Objective: The present study aimed to determine differences at sea level and altitude with age and sex in body iron content (BIC), as well as the effect of iron overload on serum hepcidin and hemoglobin levels. Materials and Methods: The study was of an analytical-observational cross-sectional design, based on secondary data analysis. The database was provided by the Laboratory of Endocrinology and Reproduction of the UPCH. For the statistical analysis, descriptive, bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed, previously evaluating the assumptions for each test. Using the STATA 16 program. Results: The present study showed differences between sexes for iron and erythropoiesis markers. Thus, body iron content is higher in men than in women and this is associated with higher values of hepcidin, ferritin and lower values of the RsTf/Ferritin index or the RsTf. This difference, disappears with age. High serum hepcidin and ferritin values and low RsTf values are associated with iron overload.Conclusions: Body iron content increases with increasing age in women and does not vary with altitude of residence.
