The aim of the study was to estimate the stray dog population in the district of Huarmey, department of Ancash - Perú. For this, 7 of the 28 quadrants into which the district is divided were randomly selected, and the World Animal Protection (WAP) methodological guide was used to count and estimate the stray dog population. A form was developed to record the number of stray dogs observed and classify them according to their characteristics (sex, size, welfare indicators and body condition). Counts were conducted at 2 times of the day, during daytime (5:00 - 7:00 am) and nighttime (20:00 - 22:00 pm). The study reported a total of 75 stray dogs during daytime (300 ± 204) and 66 stray dogs during nighttime (264 ± 250). Considering the surface area of the district of Huarmey (2,899.64 km2 ) and its population (30,560 inhabitants), it was calculated that there were 0.104 dogs/km2 and 98.2 dogs per 10,000 inhabitants during the daytime and 0.091 dogs/km2 and 86.4 dogs per 10,000 inhabitants during the nighttime. The majority of stray dogs observed were large-sized males during daytime hours and medium-sized males during nighttime hours. 30.6% of dogs had extremely slim (1) and slim (2) body condition during daytime hours and 25.8% of dogs had a slim body condition (2) during nighttime hours. Regarding welfare indicators, the most frequent physical lesions were skin lesions and lameness; however, more than 92% of the dogs did not present any alterations. It is hoped that the results of the study will provide a base line for the Provincial Municipality of Huarmey to implement programs to control and manage the stray dog population in the district.
