Abstract: El objetivo del estudio fue estimar la población de canes vagabundos en el distrito de Huarmey, departamento de Áncash – Perú. Para ello, se seleccionaron de manera aleatoria 7 de los 28 cuadrantes en el que se divide el distrito, y para el conteo y estimación de la población de canes vagabundos se utilizó la guía metodológica de World Animal Protection (WAP). Se elaboró una ficha para registrar el número de canes vagabundos observados y clasificarlos de acuerdo a sus características (sexo, tamaño, indicadores de bienestar y condición corporal). Los conteos se realizaron en 2 momentos del día, siendo estos en horario diurno (5:00 – 7:00 am) y horario nocturno (20:00 – 22:00 pm). El estudio reportó un total de 75 canes vagabundos en el horario diurno (300 ± 204) y 66 canes vagabundos en el horario nocturno (264 ± 250). Considerando la superficie del distrito de Huarmey (2 899.64 km2) y su población (30 560 habitantes), se calculó que habría 0.104 can/km2 y 98.2 canes por cada 10 000 habitantes en el horario diurno y 0.091 can/km2 y 86.4 canes por cada 10 000 habitantes en el horario nocturno. La mayoría de canes vagabundos observados fueron machos de tamaño grande en horario diurno y machos de tamaño mediano en horario nocturno. El 30.6% de canes tenían una condición corporal muy delgada (1) y delgada (2) en el horario diurno y 25.8% de los canes tenían una condición corporal delgada (2) en el horario nocturno. En cuanto a indicadores de bienestar, las lesiones físicas más frecuentes fueron lesiones en piel y cojeras, sin embargo, más del 92% de canes no presentaron alteraciones. Se espera que los resultados del estudio aporten una línea base para que la Municipalidad Provincial de Huarmey pueda implementar programas de control y manejo de la población de canes vagabundos del distrito.
The aim of the study was to estimate the stray dog population in the district of Huarmey, department of Ancash - Perú. A form was developed to record the number of stray dogs observed and classify them according to their characteristics (sex, size, welfare indicators and body condition). Counts were conducted at 2 times of the day, during daytime (5:00 - 7:00 am) and nighttime (20:00 - 22:00 pm). The study reported a total of 75 stray dogs during daytime (300 ± 204) and 66 stray dogs during nighttime (264 ± 250).
