High wind frequency variability is very important in the Peruvian upwelling system, since short but intense wind events can cause the occurrence of extreme oceanographic events such as heat waves or hypoxia events. In the present work, 12 of 16 global CMIP6 models were selected to evaluate changes in interday wind variability in the Peruvian outcrop system under two future scenarios: SSP5-8.5 (pessimistic) and SSP1-2.6 (optimistic) in the period 2080-2100, compared to the historical period 1990-2010. No significant changes in wind distribution were found under the optimistic scenario, while under the pessimistic scenario the models project a slight shift in the daily wind distribution towards lower intensity winds off the north coast. This change implies that: the occurrence of weak wind days (less than the 25th percentile) increases between 5-20% in summer and between 5-21% in winter, and decreases the occurrence of days of strong wind (greater than the 75th percentile) between 10-15% in summer and between 5-10% in winter. Likewise, it was found that in the historical period: i) strong wind events (consecutive days of strong wind) occur with a frequency between 12 and 28 events per year, most often off the north coast, with a duration between 2 and 7 days, and a maximum intensity between 7 and 10 m/s, ii) weak wind events (consecutive days of weak wind) occur with a frequency between 12 and 28 events per year, also most frequently off the north coast, with a duration between 2 and 7 days, and a minimum intensity between 1 and 3 m/s. Under future scenarios, no robust changes in the characteristics of weak or strong wind events are projected, except in the slight decrease in intensity of both events off the north coast in the pessimistic scenario. In addition, it was found that there is a 30 to 40% chance that a day of weak (or strong) wind will occur forced by the decrease (or increase) of the north-south gradient of sea surface temperature (SST) along the coast. In the pessimistic scenario, this mechanism (north-south gradient of the SST) could be more active and force the projected changes in wind distribution off the north coast.
