Background: It is necessary to ensure the safety of blood as it represents a potential vehicle for the transmission of infectious diseases. Objectives: To measure the frequency of transmissible infections in postulant blood donors and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the frequency of transmissible infections in postulant blood donors of the Hospital Central FAP and a private clinic. Materials and Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study. Using a database, the frequency of blood donor postulants seropositive to screening tests during the years 2018 to 2021 was identified. Results: The frequency of communicable infectious diseases was 2.4%. In Hospital Central FAP the frequency was 2.9% (95% CI: 2.46 - 3.47) and in Javier Prado Clinic it was 2.1% (95% CI: 1.79 - 2.47) [p=0.0049, Test of proportions]. A significant decrease in the seropositive rate between the "pre-pandemic" and "during pandemic" periods was found at Hospital Central FAP [(3.46% vs 2.23%) p=0.015, Test of proportions]; on the contrary, the seropositive rate did not vary significantly at Javier Prado Clinic [(2.25% vs 1.98%) p=0.42, Test of proportions]. Conclusion: The frequencies of seropositivity to markers of infection of communicable diseases in both blood banks are of lower value compared to previous studies carried out in our country.
