Introduction: Palatal rugae possess immutable, proper and perennial characteristics that can be used as a method of human identification in cases of difficult identification of a dead person with fingerprint damage and dental records. They are surrounded by the cheeks, lips, tongue and buccal fat, therefore, they remain protected in case of trauma, incineration or mass disasters. Objective: To characterize the palatal rugae in a Peruvian population according to their number, sex, length, shape, arch type. Material and methods: 80 plaster casts were taken and examined from patients seen in a dental clinic according to the selection criteria. Results: Males were 37.5% (n=30) and females 62.5% (n=50), oval arch type was 81.25% (n=65), E-type palatal rugae morphology was 1.47% (n=4.47), and main length was 1.77% (n=8.08). No statistically significant difference was found between the number, morphology and length of palatal rugae according to sex and type of dental arch (p>0.05). Conclusions: No significant difference was found in the variables evaluated.
