Background. Awareness of the most common symptoms of a stroke could help improve stroke recognition and reduce the delay in seeking medical attention to receive adequate treatment within the recommended time. Thus, countries have chosen to implement mass media campaigns. Objective. To evaluate the efficacy of mass media campaigns as a way to increase awareness of the most common symptoms of a stroke and how they should act. Methods. We performed a systematic review of the use of mass media campaigns for stroke. We systematically searched PubMed, EMBASE, CENTRAL (Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials), and Global index Medicus for articles published until December 2021. We extracted data focusing on the type of campaigns and the results measured and we qualified the articles depending on the quality of the studies. Results. 19 studies were included that evaluated the effectiveness of mass media campaigns. An increase in the symptom recognition, emergency calls and number of patients evaluated for a presumptive stroke diagnosis was found. Controversial results were found regarding the number of thrombolysis carried out and prehospital delay. Conclusions. This study shows that mass media campaigns may aid in symptom recognition for stroke, however, more studies are needed to evaluate the impact they have on prompt treatment.
