Longirostry (long and slender rostrum) is a trait that evolved several times among river dolphins. This feature is thought to possess a strong adaptive component linked to riverine habitats. In contrast, extant oceanic dolphins generally have shorter and more voluminous rostra. Pliopontos littoralis, discovered from ~8-6 million-years-old rocks of marine origin in Sacaco (Arequipa, Peru) is a dolphin that would have had marine-coastal habits. I inquired about its ecology, marine or fluvial, since its long and slender rostrum is very similar to that of river dolphins. To provide inferences about Pliopontos ecology, I used two-dimensional geometric morphometry in a phylogenetic context. The database included 58 dolphin taxa (odontocetes), including riverine and marine, living and fossil forms. The analyses recovered Pliopontos within the morphospace of river dolphins (e.g., Lipotes, Inia) and suggested a fluvial ecomorphotype for Pliopontos. Although Pliopontos is positioned far from living marine taxa as expected, the analyses recovered several longirostrine and hyperlongirostrine Miocene taxa, presumably coastal-marine, close to the riverine ecomorphotype. My findings suggest that there was a coastal-marine ecomorphotype, predominantly long-snouted like modern river dolphins. The morphospace of marine dolphins is notably larger when including fossil forms, and the morphological gaps between river and marine dolphins are reduced. In summary, my analyses do not discriminate between fluvial or marine-coastal ecology for Pliopontos. Rather, these suggest that it may have inhabited both coastal and river waters, as extant Pontoporia blainvillei, which inhabits the Río de La Plata and the Atlantic coast of Brazil and Argentina. These preliminary results provide a model to explore the morphological evolution of river dolphins from Miocene marine-coastal forms.
