The changes in weight at birth and during school age pose a risk of chronic diseases in adulthood, which, although development in vascular remodeling, require monitoring of the child's nutritional development. Objective: To analyze the relationship between birth weight and nutritional status of children aged 5-9 years from Portoviejo canton. Material and methods: Cross-sectional, analytical study that investigated the relationship between birth weight and nutritional status of 323 children from Portoviejo canton. The relationship between independent variables and dependent variable: current nutritional status was analyzed. For the analysis we use statistical package SPSS v15.0 Results: It was observed that 69.3% of the participants had a normal birth weight and between 5 and 9 years old, however, children with high birth weight and overweight/obesity in school age, represents 0.9%. It was found that there is a low positive correlation between birth weight and BMI in children aged 5 to 9 years. Conclusions: Children with higher birth weight are more likely to be obese and overweight based on BMI for age, however, children with low birth weight are not necessarily lean at school age.
