Background: In Peru, HTLV-1 infection, despite being endemic, is a neglected disease and little known by the general population. Hence, it is important for medical students to know about this disease in order to perform timely diagnosis and management. However, there are no studies of knowledge on the subject in medical students. Objective: To evaluate the knowledge, attitudes and perception about HTLV-1 infection in students of the last 2 years of their medical career. Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study. The study population was the sixth and seventh year medical students of the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in the year 2021. Sample of 201 students. Data was collected through a virtual questionnaire. Results: The majority of sixth year students obtained a score between acceptable (43.16%) and poor (34.74%), while seventh year students obtained a score between good (29.25%) and acceptable (33.96%). The questions with the lowest percentage of correct answers were about infectious complications (15.92%), main mechanism of transmission (23.38%), diagnostic tests (25.37%) and region of highest prevalence in Peru (25.87%). The majority had a positive attitude and perception towards this infection. Conclusion: The level of knowledge is not optimal, since most of them obtained an acceptable level of knowledge. We consider it necessary to reinforce the knowledge on HTLV-1 during the years of the course, with emphasis on the topics of less knowledge.
