Background: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has caused a pandemic presents mainly with respiratory symptoms, but abnormal hematological parameters are frequently observed. Objective: To describe the alterations in hematological parameters and morphological abnormalities in blood cells of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 at the Cayetano Heredia Hospital. Material and Methods: Cross-sectional study carried out in the hematology laboratory of the Cayetano Heredia Hospital in Lima, Peru. We reviewed 133 hemograms and peripheral laminae from the results platform and image bank of the Hematology Area from January to March 2021. Patients over 18 years of age hospitalized with a diagnosis of COVID-19 were included. Blood cell count was performed by hemogram and morphology by blood smear using Wright staining technique. Results: 60.9% (81) were male. Blood cell count showed neutrophilia (65.4%), anemia (64.7%), leukocytosis (60.9%), lymphopenia (59.4%) and thrombocytosis (27.8%) as the most frequent alterations. In red blood cells, anisocytosis (18.8%) was the most frequent alteration, toxic granulations (51.1%) were the most frequent alterations of white blood cells as well as hypersegmentation of neutrophils (32.3%), reactive lymphocytes (15%) and acquired Pelger Hüet anomaly (APHA) (9%) were also observed and at platelet level macroplatelets (33. 8%). Conclusions: Our study describes a variety of alterations in the count and morphology of peripheral blood cells in hospitalized patients with COVID 19.
